We are proud to announce that AQHA Adventure N The Sand a 1998 gelding will be coming to Slash Bar A Ranch. He is an outstanding HUS horse and will be showing in WP, HUS throughout the year. Dino stands over 17.1 hands and knows it. He will be arriving at the end of the month and we are so excited. Our trainer Janet has shown him a little last year and fell in love with him at that time. He is being sent to us by a good family friend where we have gotten several horses in the past. Dino will be welcomed and loved here and we are looking forward to riding and showing him for a long time. He has won several points in HUS and Hunt Seat Eq and has qualified for worlds in 2004. He is a nice, gentle gelding with a ton of showing left in him. I will be sure to post pictures of him on his way here. You can find more pics of him in the Show Barn tab on the website. Look out for Slash Bar A on this one this season!
On another note it has been extremely cold around here. With the nightly temps dropping down below -20 degrees! The past two nights have been -26 and -24, with our daily temps reaching a whopping 3 degrees before nightfall again. A real cold snap is not appreciated and i have been burning through twice as much hay because of it. Blankets on the old horses and extra feed for everyone. I don't want to work the horses to hard in this weather with all that cold air out there, they don't seem to mind taking a training break at all. All of the pregnant mares look good and we should be expecting 5 healthy foals this spring! I still have my two big paint broodmares for sale and if they do not sell i will be re-breeding them to Gunner this year.
With all that cold weather the trucks are another thing that really don't like anything. Trying to get a 26 year old diesel to fire up after a few nights at -20 or colder is not easy and most days proves to be impossible. Luckily i have the trusty old dodge gaser that fires up every day, without that truck getting hay would be near impossible. We have been asked to take care of our neighbors 75+cows as well for the nest 4 months. Which is exactly what i needed along with all my horses and the rescue going...but i enjoy it never the less. Breaking ice in the river and feeding 75 cows in sub zero temps in a snow covered pasture..that right there is the life.
We are working on getting some nice working horses in here too, that way i can have a new performance horse and Janet is looking at a 2D barrel mare. We of course have the 2 year olds to start and Gunner will be working his butt off on the ranch this summer with cattle work and reining where we can slip it in. I would like to get another good sturdy trustworthy horse to ride, as i am down to my appy gelding this year. That way i can haul out and make some good money on the range this year. With the lack of feedlots up here, it is easier to ride the range for ranchers than haul all the way to a feedlot for saddle work. Not saying i don't like my 2 year olds, they just sometimes don't get the big picture.
2013 looks to be very promising a year for us around here. We are working on those big changes and even with our newest challenges we are pushing forward. The rescue has gone strong through January and i hope to move these last few out so we can start pulling from the auctions again.
